Today’s events did not disappoint fans or players in the Championships. Some amazing hockey took place, as well as lot’s of overtime.
In the Mite division the Red Deer Snipers fought hard but couldn’t contain the Sherwood Park Bullfrogs. The Snipers played the first period perfectly, but fell short in the second.
A shoot out would determine the Champions in the Squirt division. The number one seed Sherwood Park Bullfrogs took on the second seed Reed Deer Snipers in the most exciting game of the tournament. The score was five – five at the end of overtime, and after six shooters we would have a Champion. Bennett Allen beat the Snipers’ goalie on the left side to give the Bullfrogs the Gold and are ready to head to Toronto.
In the Pee Wee division, the Canadian Wolves shocked the number one seed Red Deer Tour Snipers by a score of five – two. The game was a lot closer than the score as the Wolves scored three of their goals toward the end of the game. Both teams will be great contenders at finals and I’m looking forward to seeing them play in Toronto.
The Moose Jawbreakers and the Red Deer 96 Jets would both go undefeated until the championship game. The Jets would jump to a quick lead and keep throughout the first period by a score of four – two. But the Jawbreakers would come back and out score the Jets five – three. So for a third game in a row we would head to overtime and with 2:47 left in sudden death James Gavme of the Jets went top shelf and would seal the deal and take home Gold.
Overall the tournament was a huge success. There was a great article in yesterdays sports section of the paper, and a local news station doing interviews with players and coaches. To see the story go to globalnews.ca/Edmonton. I would like to again thank Hockey Alberta and the Sherwood Park volunteer committee. These are the people that make this sport the absolute best.
