Compelling and Rich

We find ourselves in Day 3 here in Buffalo.  The drama unfolds today in Squirt, Pee Wee, and Bantam with champions crowned in 6 divisions.  The medals are ready to be handed out, it now comes down to a battle of endurance and wills.

Day 2 ended in thrilling fashion last night with the Jr/Mens division final taking place in the twilight hours.  Fans who stuck around were rewarded with the game of the tourney so far.  The Bar Down Billionaires entered the final unbeaten and were poised to take home the crown against the Buffalo Steel.  With a 2 man advantage and a one goal lead, Bar Down could have chosen to play possession and run out the clock.  A shot at the empty net went wide and deflected to a Steel player who chipped it towards the Bar Down goal from the length of the floor.  As the remaining seconds ticked away, a foot race developed between the Billionaires goalie and Dave Bentley of the Steel.  Bentley got to the puck a hair ahead of the competition and made a quick move to find himself an open net waiting.  He fired the puck from just past the blue line, beating the horn and tickling the twine with .8 seconds remaining.  Heading into overtime, the Steel used the momentum to notch the gold medal clinching goal 2 minutes in to complete the comeback.  What a way to end an exciting day of hockey.  The mood in the rink was amped as it was with the Stanley Cup going to an extra period.

The medal quest continued at 630am with the squirt division back in action as the last team to complete round robin play.  We have handed out one more set of medals today with the Pee Wee silver final.  The RV Reebok Wings earned Gold with a 4-1 victory against the Butler Cobras Blue.  Next up is the Pee Wee Gold final this afternoon.

We are here until this evening at the Northtown center.  The pizza is on its way for lunch and the medals are getting prepped and polished.  The fun has just begun and we will keep you updated as usual.  Roll on….
