We are only 2 games in on each rink Sunday morning, and we have already had some wild finishes.
6am – Rink 1 – Hockey House Army vs. Norcal Extreme
A tight defensive game went to OT tied 1-1. A little more than halfway through the extra period, Extreme couldn’t convert on a 2 on 0 chance. Hockey House took the puck the length of the floor and scored the game winner, the first goal of the weekend for the player that scored.
6:40am – Rink 1 – CCM Bulldogs vs. Mission Raiders Green
With 2 minutes to go, the Raiders were on the power play while down a goal, 4-3. They were able to generate some scoring chances, and ended up tying the game. It looked like we were going to overtime. With 3 seconds to go, a Raiders player was at the red line and broke free. He took the puck from his forehand to his backhand with under a second to go, and with literally 0.1 seconds left, put the puck top shelf, hitting the netting just as the buzzer sounded. The building erupted, and the bench cleared in joy for the Raiders, as they move on to the semifinal.
6:40am – Rink 2 – Silicon Valley Quakes vs. Chico Firebirds
The Quakes were up 3-1 in the game with less than 3 minutes to go, when a player checked a Firebirds player in the corner. Chico scored on the ensuing power play, and carried that momentum into the next faceoff, scoring again to tie the game. A Firebirds tripping penalty put them down a man, but the Quakes took one during their power play to even the strength on the floor at 3. A wild finish took place, as the Quakes ended up scoring a goal, and taking another penalty all within the last 2 minutes, and a crazy flurry took place at the net. Chico was not able to tie the game again, and the Quakes ended up advancing.
The setup in the rink is such that I was able to watch all 3 wild finishes within less than 40 minutes. I love this place!
More to come later…
