Rapid Fire Mid-Day and Feeling Patriotic!

By Jeremy Ellis

We are closing in on the halfway point of the 2013 Moriches Regional.  The rink has been abuzz all day long with non-stop action here and the anticipation of the IIHF Gold Medal Game in Germany.  Interest was high for the action abroad as local boy made good, Team USA Captain, Greg Thompson goes for gold.  Greg cut his teeth through the ranks of NARCh and was looking to add to his medal collection, which included a NARCh Pro championship from 2011.  Team USA did not disappoint with a 6-3 triumph over Sweden.  Leading the charge was coach Joe Cook, president of Alkali Hockey.  All of those guys have ties to NARCh and can be found on the rink for the Pro division this summer in Toronto.  Congrats Boys!

Meanwhile, the teams here have been racing up and down the floor at the Rapid Fire Arena all morning long.  Local programs Tour Roadrunners and Mission Black Ice are well represented and have been clashing all morning.  Throw in the Long Island 495ers and more men’s teams and you’ve got a party!

The largest division, Men/Jr’s, is up for grabs with a couple teams ready to compete for Gold this weekend.  In the Squirt Division, Black Ice 02 and the Roadrunners 00 both look strong after 3 games.  They tied 4-4 in Round Robin play.  Pee Wee division has 3 teams this weekend and the Roadrunners 99 have beaten both teams so far and will have the #1 Seed.  The Mite division is just getting started while in Midget the Black Ice are the only undefeated squad after 2 games.

We are running to the AM hours here today so feel free to stop on by.  I know Mike has picked up some great photos of action so far and the Go-Pros are getting a workout for this event’s highlight video.  Round robin and playoff games all day and night with the first championship set for 9am Sunday with the Midget Gold Final.

More recaps to come later on and congrats once again to all of the Boys with Team USA!
